Dear Freeport School Community,

As we recognize Juneteenth and Father’s Day, we are reminded of the strength, courage, support, and love that shape our community and guide our students forward.

Juneteenth is more than a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.  Juneteenth represents a defining moment in our nation’s story.  It’s a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.  It calls for us to honor those who fought for equality and to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every student has access to opportunity, support, and a learning environment where they can reach their highest potential.  Juneteenth is a reminder of our commitment to continue building a school community where every student is empowered and given the opportunity to thrive.

This weekend also provides an opportunity to celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, coaches, mentors, and father figures who pour into the lives of our young people each day.  The presence of caring, committed men can have a lasting impact on a student’s confidence, sense of belonging, and vision for what is possible.  Whether helping with homework, cheering from the sidelines, offering words of encouragement, or simply showing up consistently, they remind our students that they are seen, valued, and capable of greatness.

Together, Juneteenth and Father’s Day call us to reflect on legacy.  This reflection is not only about the legacy we inherit, but also the legacies we continue to uphold and the ones we are actively creating. They challenge us to build communities where freedom is matched with opportunity, where every student feels supported, and where strong relationships help shape the leaders of tomorrow.

I encourage you to take time to honor the significance of Juneteenth, celebrate the fathers and positive male role models who make a difference in your lives, and cherish the moments spent with those you love.

On behalf of the Freeport Board of Education and the entire Freeport Public Schools family, I wish you a meaningful Juneteenth and a joyful Father’s Day.

Your Partner in Education,

Dr. Shakirah Miller
